Some of these statistics have me scratching my head. As a progressive who votes Democrat, and a New Yorker, I’m almost hoping some of it is wrong, but the NY Times does pretty good reporting, so the numbers are likely accurate!

Tanya’s Comments: It’s about time that Republicans acknowledge what the Confederate flag means to Black people, and most Americans in general. This move represents progress. I commend Gov. Haley for making this tough (for her political career), but brave decision.

We told them so: Democrats are searching for their soul… belatedly

Well over a year ago, The Secular Jurist began to repeatedly warn Democrats they would lose the crucial 2014 election and seriously divide the party going forward if they didn’t coalesce around a core set of principles (see here, here, and here).  In A Blueprint for the Left, we proposed the following political platform:

• Economic fairness through the concern for workers and for human prosperity.
• Social justice as a principled commitment to civil rights and equal application of the law.
• Public education as the instrument of knowledge and for developing productive citizens.
• Secular government to ensure both freedom of, and freedom from religion.
• Political equality via open democracy and restricting the corrupting influence of money.
• Self-determination through the preclusion of transnational and supranational authorities.

Sooner or later, Republicans will have to confront their Tea Party extremists

Late last night, the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives once again cowered before the radical extremists in their party.  After the firebrand Tea Party senator from Texas – Ted Cruz – had brazenly scuttled House Speaker John Boehner’s border remediation plan the day before, Republican leaders acquiesced to the rabid right-wing pressure and passed an even more draconian pair of bills in the media shadow of a Friday evening (see:  House passes $694 million border bill).

Sooner or later, Republicans will have no other choice but to directly confront this insurgency within their political party.  Otherwise, the Tea Party will inevitably win this escalating GOP civil war.  Why?  Because what drives the Tea Party is unrelenting zealotry for an irrational ideology based on hostility:  hatred of democratic governance, hatred of ethnic, racial, religious, and sexual equality, and a profound resentment over losing the…

Sen. Elizabeth Warren Proposes Refinancing Student Loan Interest Rates

I received info and a petition asking to support Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s new proposal to help college students pay back their loans. Other than what the petition says, and information from Warren’s own website, I haven’t found much else about it. From Warren’s senate website:
