If you thought that the low wages fast food workers are paid only affect workers, this article and the accompanying study shows that the issue of fair wages is one we must all take notice of.

I received some news in my email today from the activist group SumOfUs.org saying that the fast food industry is still paying their workers only minimum wage, despite outcry from workers and those who support them. Any fast food worker will tell you that in most cities, minimum wage is barely enough for rent/mortgage, food, clothing, and the day-to-day expenses that come up for all of us. As I’ve discussed in previous posts about this issue, many of these workers need welfare assistance to survive, which is a crying shame in a nation of plenty.

If The Gap Can Raise Wages, So Can Walmart! (petition)

From Credo Mobilize:

Walmart cannot be neutral when, despite its $17 billion in profits last year, it chooses to pay its employees so little that many are forced to rely on tax-payer programs. Pay your workers a minimum of $25,000 per year so they are not forced to rely on government assistance.

Increasing the Minimum Wage Will Not Equal Disaster

Republicans want us to believe that higher wages will lead to higher prices and lower employment. Studies have proven, however, that this is a myth based on faulty logic and misinformation.

Tell Congress: Support a $10/hr minimum wage! (petition)

From workingfamiliesparty.org:

President Obama endorses a minimum wage increase to $10 an hour. His announcement comes just days after New Jersey voters passed a minimum wage increase at the ballot box and the city of SeaTac, WA approved a $15 an hour minimum wage for area airport and hotel workers.

The message is loud and clear: Congress, vote to increase the federal minimum wage to $10 an hour.

TO FAST FOOD CEOS: YOUR WORKERS SHOULDN’T NEED FOOD STAMPS (petition)

I know I’ve posted quite a few petitions about fast food workers and the minimum wage. I do so because I think it’s so important that people who work hard get treated with respect and dignity. If we as a society allow the current worker conditions to continue, we are allowing these ultra-wealthy CEO’s to be greedy. We are telling them that we condone their behavior and that their cruelty is okay with us.

Let’s be active and demand that fast food workers get treated better. Show the government we demand change!

From CredoMobilize.com:

TO: THE CEOs OF WENDY’S, MCDONALD’S, PIZZA HUT, DOMINO’S, KFC, TACO BELL, AND BURGER KING

Fast food workers in New York City barely make enough to get by. Many of us make minimum wage — just $7.25 an hour, or as little as $11,000 a year. Meanwhile, the Goliath corporations we work for, like McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut, are part of a $200 billion industry. These corporations reap huge profits and shower CEOs with exorbitant compensation while most of their employees qualify for food stamps.

Fast food workers are parents building a better future for our kids, seniors who can’t afford retirement, hardworking young people dreaming of college, faithful members of your congregation, and your community-minded neighbors.

We are New Yorkers. We’re united in the fight for a higher wage, so we can afford the food, clothing, and housing our families need and deserve. Boosting pay for our jobs will allow us to put more money into the economy.

From CredoMobilize.com:

TO: MCDONALD’S, WENDY’S, BURGER KING, TACO BELL, KFC, PIZZA HUT, DOMINO’S, PAPA JOHN’S:

Last year your combined profits were $7.35 billion. Yet you still paid most of your workers less than $11,200 a year – poverty wages. It’s shameful. And outrageous.

On August 29, thousands of workers in cities across the country – from Los Angeles, to Peoria, Hartford, Tampa and many more – went on a National Strike against low pay.

By now, everyone knows that fast food employees can’t make ends meet on $7.25 an hour or barely more. They know how incredibly profitable, and out of touch, the corporations we work for are. They know – you know – that something has to change. Starting now.

Raise the Minimum Wage! petition

I found an article about raising the minimum wage and this petition on youngprogressivevoices.com. The article is very informative and includes facts about raising the minimum wage, countering the myths that have always circled around this issue. Once you read the article, which was very well-researched, you’ll realize that any arguments against raising the minimum wage have no basis in reality.
