“President Obama just banned the federal government’s transfer of certain military vehicles and weaponry to local and state police departments across America.”

“This victory means the federal government can no longer stock local police departments with certain battlefield gear that has no place in our neighborhoods – like grenade launchers, high-caliber weapons, and tracked armored vehicles. This is a big step. For too long, our police have treated communities of color like the enemy – and banning these weapons is crucial to shifting the culture of policing in America.

New restrictions for local police require that they seek community approval in order to get federal military equipment. Your city council, mayor, or other elected officials have to sign off. And police departments must show they practice community policing and lawfully respect your rights.

Over 77,000 other ACLU supporters signed our petition demanding an end to federal funding and support of local police militarization. And President Obama heard your call!”
